Media Server - MS
(1-digtial media) Media servers (sometimes called streaming servers) are computers that receive requests for media, setup a communication session to the requesting media client and provides the downloading or continuous transmission (streaming) of digital media. (2-telephone) Media servers provide common telephony features and/or specialized telephony capabilities to communication systems. The media servers' many functions are to process call connections and manage media access to media resources. Media servers can be hardware based or software-based. Hardware based media servers are specifically designed to efficiently and effectively perform call processing and media management. Software based media servers use software that operates on common computing equipment. Examples of media servers include announcement servers, conference servers, voicemail servers and CALEA server.
